Pres. Komorowski calls for swift implementation of NATO summit declarations

Komorowski made the comments while on an official visit in the Estonian capital of Tallinn, Tuesday, to meet his counterparts from the Baltic States to talk on security issues and the outcome of the NATO summit, the ongoing Ukraine crisis, as well as regional cooperation on transport and energy.

At a joint press conference following the multilateral meet, which brought together Estonia’s Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Lithuania’s Dalia Grybauskaite and Latvia’s Andris Berzins, Poland’s president underlined the importance of political coordination among countries along the Baltic coastline “in the face of an unprecedented worsening of security in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict”.

Komorowski added that a unified policy should be applied to Ukraine “and its security, independence and right to make sovereign decisions” as well as within the EU and NATO.

“I’m satisfied to see that our region has a common view on a wide range of issues,” Komorowski said, calling for “exceptional concern” in relation to the decisions taken by NATO leaders at a summit in Wales earlier in September.

“This is a fundamental issue for the security of our region, for all our countries,” Komorowski said, adding that “I am certain that thanks to a joint effort we can implement the political decisions made in Newport”.

In the face of the Ukraine crisis, September’s NATO summit ended with a declaration by members of the alliance to raise combat readiness, including the formation of a ‘spearhead’ which is to include a rapid reaction force numbering some 4,000 troops, as well as the development of military infrastructure in NATO’s eastern flank.
