Russia threatens Serbia with embargo to stop reexports of Polish apples

Russia has threatened Serbia with a ban on fruit and vegetable imports on account of alleged re-exporting of Polish apples.

The Russian veterinary and phytosanitary service, Rossielkhoznadzor last week announced a significant increase in apple imports from Serbia has been observed since mid-2014.
“We suspect we are dealing with re-exports,” Rossielkhoznadzor spokesperson, Yulia Trofimova is quoted as saying by the Russian news agency RIA-Novosti on Monday.
“The apples are most likely Polish,” she added, though noting that there is as yet no certainty.
Unless Serbia provides adequate explanation within 10 days, Russia will introduce an embargo.
Russia banned food imports from the US, EU, Australia, Canada and Norway on 7 August 2014.
With some of the trade rerouted through third countries, Moscow has since banned fruit and vegetables from Ukraine, meat and fruit from Moldova, meat from Montenegro and fruit and vegetables from Albania. (an)
