A Polish man was detained at Auckland Airport over the weekend after he was caught attempting to smuggle plant samples through customs in his underpants.

The man, who is a New Zealand resident, was taken aside after sniffer dogs scented something unusual in his trousers. He was duly strip-searched.

After the unlikely items were revealed, the detainee told customs officials that the plants were unobtainable in New Zealand, and that he had simply wanted to enrich his garden with new species.

Among the items seized was a strip of ivy that was apparently taken from a Polish castle, as well as a bulb and a selection of seeds.

The man could now be prosecuted and New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries appears to be steadfast on the matter.

“We have zero tolerance towards this type of behaviour, which could endanger New Zealand’s primary industries and native plant life by introducing foreign pests and diseases,” a ministry statement stressed. (nh)
