Mull was honoured “for outstanding services in the development of Polish-American friendly relations and cooperation.”
Komorowski said that Mull's tenure as ambassador “contributed to strengthening that friendship, built on a common approach to the issue of freedom.”
Mull's spell as ambassador, which began in 2012, followed two other postings to Poland in the mid-eighties and the mid-nineties.
He recalled that 29 years ago the then communist Polish authorities accused him of masterminding a network of NATO spies.
“In 1986, following those accusations, my wife and I were were regretfully preparing to leave Poland, thinking that this was our first and last stay here,” he said.
“If someone had told me then that I would be standing today in the Belvedere [Palace] before a democratically elected Polish president, receiving this prestigious honour in a room full of NATO representatives, I never would have believed it,” he added.
“This is truly a miracle in my life, and one that I'm deeply moved by.” (nh)
