European Commission green-lights Czech-Polish border investment

The European Commission has green-lit funding of up to EUR 266 million to help revitalise areas along the Czech-Polish border.

The vast majority, EUR 226 million, comes from the coffers of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Although parts of the pool will be directed towards investments in education and security, by far the largest portion is expected to be channelled towards initiatives involving cultural and natural heritage (EUR 135.7 million).
The latter projects will focus on investments in heritage and tourist sites.
Besides the renovation of historic buildings, such initiatives also include the creation of cycling paths.
Although the overall sum has been approved, applications concerning individual projects cannot be submitted until this Autumn. However, local governments drew up detailed plans several months ago.
Each major project can receive a maximum of 85 percent investment from the European Union, while the remainder must come from local authorities.
The Czech-Polish border takes in close to 800 km. On the Polish side, this stretch takes in parts of Lower Silesia, Silesia amd the Opole region. (nh)
