“Today we have a chance to demonstrate that we are a mature and responsible member of the EU; today standing on the sidelines and turning our backs to the current crisis is far below our ambitions to play an important role in the EU,” Schetyna told the Sejm lower house of parliament.

The minister stressed that Poland also currently has a great chance to show that it is a member of the EU “to help solve problems, not create them.”

“So many times in this chamber [in parliament – ed.] I have heard that Poland should pursue a more active policy in the EU,” Schetyna said.

“Poland can afford to take an ambitious, courageous policy also in terms of refugees, asylum and migration,” the minister said.

Poland has said it can take 2,000 refugees, but PM Ewa Kopacz has intimated Poland will take more. (rg/jh/rk)
