The victim was reported missing on Sunday, and a search team was dispatched to find the man.
The 30-year-old snowboarder's car had been left in the Slovak town of Tatranska Lomnica.
Calls were made to the man's mobile phone, but although it was switched on, there was no reply.
Several avalanches – including one severe one – had struck the area where the man had ventured.
A sniffer dog eventually detected a human presence beneath the snow in the early hours of Monday morning.
However, it transpired that the man was already dead before the rescue team dug him out. (nh/pk)
