Polish seaman drowns in run-up to naval drills in Sweden

A Polish seaman has drowned in the Swedish naval port of Karlskrona during preparations for an international naval exercise on the Baltic Sea, officials said on Saturday.

Two Polish seamen fell into the water at around 11:30 p.m. on Friday and one of them died, according to the Swedish navy.
Both were pulled out of the water, given cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene and rushed to hospital. But one of them did not survive.
The other seaman is under the care of doctors, officials said.
Rear Admiral Jens Nykvist, chief of the Swedish Navy, offered his condolences. “Our thoughts go out to the family of the deceased sailor and his fellow crew members," he said.
A spokesman for local police, Fredrik Bratt, said the accident was being investigated by the military, with no foul play suspected.
Sailors gathered to take part in the annual Northern Coasts drills honoured the memory of the dead Polish seaman with a minute of silence on Saturday.
This year’s Northern Coasts exercises will begin in earnest on Monday and run until 21 September. Around 5,000 sailors from countries including Poland, Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Denmark are expected to take part. (gs/pk)
