The 44-year-old British pop star's intentions are not clear but, according to Polish news portal onet.pl, the gesture could have been directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin's policies.
Robbie Williams said the performance to a crowd of 80,000 people before the world's largest football tournament was a dream come true, onet.pl reported.
He had been criticised for condoning Russian policies by performing at the event.
According to Australian public broadcaster SBS, Williams' vibrant 15-minute performance included some of his greatest and featured a duet of 'Angels' with Russian soprano Aida Garifullina, lots of dancers and Brazil's two-time world champion Ronaldo.
He changed the lyrics to his hit 'Rock DJ' to "but I did this for free". He did not sing'Party Like a Russian', which lampoons oligarchs, SBS said. (vb/pk)
