The United States has carried out a successful trial to intercept a simulated enemy ballistic missile using a defence system that is to be deployed at an American base in Poland, according to a report.

The Polish section of a US missile defence shield over Europe is being built by the Americans at Redzikowo in the north of the country.

The space24.pl website reported that the trial of the Standard Missile-3 Block IIA (SM-3 Block IIA) missile was the second successful test of its type out of four carried out so far.

The first successful SM-3 Block IIA trial took place in February 2017, according to space24.pl.

It added that the next two tests, in June 2017 and January 2018, ended in failure.

space24.pl reported the fourth trial, carried out by US Navy and the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), was held on October 26.

Interception in space

A simulated enemy ballistic missile was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Hawaii, the website said.

It added that an interceptor missile was launched from the USS John Finn destroyer. The interception took place in space, over an area west of the coast of Hawaii, according to the website.

SM-3 Block IIA missiles are to be used primarily to defend against short-range and medium-range ballistic rockets, space24.pl reported.

It added that the US plans to deploy such missiles in Japan, Romania and Poland.

The range of the Standard Missile-3 Block IIA system is probably around 2,500 km, according to space24.pl.
