New EU proposal to complicate Nord Stream 2 pipeline?

Ambassadors of EU countries meeting in Brussels on Friday backed new proposals which could complicate plans for a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, according to reports.

Warsaw opposes the planned Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which aims to send Russian gas to Germany via the Baltic Sea, bypassing the Baltic states, Poland and Ukraine.
The Reuters news agency cited EU sources as saying the proposed new rules would make it more expensive and difficult to build the pipeline but would allow it to go ahead.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed that European Union countries had reached a compromise agreement on Nord Stream 2, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
The deal struck in Brussels on Friday opens the way to negotiations with the European Parliament on the final shape of new regulations, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Polish President Andrzej Duda said in October that the construction of the pipeline despite a lack of approval from all EU members showed a lack of solidarity within the bloc.
Duda added that the pipeline would threaten the energy security of Central and Eastern Europe and would result in one supplier dominating the European Union market.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in May that Nord Stream 2 was “a new hybrid weapon” aimed at the European Union and NATO.
