Among those taking part in Thursday’s ceremony at the Vatican was Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello, who is a senior advisor to Pope Francis, and a string of Polish officials led by Deputy Foreign Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk.

The ceremony took place two days before the 100th anniversary of the Vatican recognising Poland as an independent country.

Poland regained independence on November 11, 1918, after 123 years of foreign rule.
