The summit of the Visegrad Group—a regional cooperation platform—and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe would be an opportunity to debate topics including Brexit and reform of the European Union, Konrad Szymański, Poland's deputy foreign minister in charge of European affairs, said ahead of the meeting.

Szymański told Polish state news agency PAP: "Thursday’s summit will be a good opportunity to discuss regional and global challenges, including the security situation in East Asia, current events related to Brexit and the process of institutional reform of the EU.”

The Visegrad Group is a regional platform that brings together Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Thursday’s summit in Slovakia takes place a day before an EU-Japan summit in Brussels.

Meanwhile, Poland’s Morawiecki held talks with the Japanese prime minister in the Slovak capital Bratislava on Wednesday evening.
