The ZAR Theatre from Wrocław, south-western Poland, has won the prestigious Total Theatre Award in the Physical/Visual Theatre category for the most innovative production at the Edinburgh Fringe.
The play, ‘Caesarean Section. Essays on Suicide’ also won the Herald Angel award from the critics of the Glasgow Herald.
As the festival brochure says, “the title of the performance is a metaphor for suicidal compulsion and the involuntary force that pulls us back from the brink”.
The musical structure of ‘Caesarean Section’ was developed by layering polyphonic Corsican songs with Bulgarian, Romanian, Icelandic and Chechen songs.
During the research for the production, members of Theatre ZAR made several trips to Corsica, in search of new material for the emerging musical score.
Three other Polish companies were nominated for Total Theatre Awards. (mk/pg)
