One in four Poles has never travelled abroad

Seventy-seven percent of Poles have been to a foreign country, if only once, a survey by the CBOS Institute has indicated.

In comparison with a similar survey conducted three years ago, the number of Poles who have visited foreign lands has grown by eight percentage points. The growth recorded since 1993 is 28 percent.
According to the survey, the number of respondents who speak a foreign language has grown by 16 percentage points since 1997 and by 2 points since 2012, and now stands at 53 percent. Of those who can communicate in a foreign language, 32 percent declare English, 20 percent Russian, 14 percent German, 2 percent French and 1 percent Spanish.
The list of most popular foreign destinations has not changed over the past two decades. Germany is listed by 42 percent of respondents, the Czech Republic by 26 percent and Slovakia by 18 percent. Italy, France, Britain, Austria, Holland, Spain and Greece are next on the list.
The survey was conducted a month ago on a representative group of 989 adult Poles, using face-to-face computer-assisted interviews. (mk/nh)
