European celebrities write ‘love letter’ to Britons

Prominent Poles are among some 140 figures from the world of culture, science, architecture and sport from across Europe who have signed an open letter urging Britons to vote to stay in the EU.

Britons will decide in a June 23 referendum whether to remain in the European Union.
In their letter, the celebrities write: “All of us in Europe respect the right of the British people to decide whether they wish to remain with us in the European Union. It is your decision, and we will all accept it.
“Nevertheless, if it will help the undecided to make up their minds, we would like to express how very much we value having the United Kingdom in the European Union. It is not just treaties that join us to your country, but bonds of admiration and affection. All of us hope that you will vote to renew them. Britain, please stay.”
The letter was published in The Times Literary Supplement. Among its signatories are several big names in Polish culture, including the composer Krzysztof Penderecki and film directors Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Zanussi and Agnieszka Holland.
The letter was also signed by the Nobel Prize-winning writer Elfriede Jelinek, the pianist Alfred Brendel, the actress Isabella Rossellini and the singer Nana Mouskouri. (mk/pk)
