"A thirst to explore the world, the human,” is the slogan of this year’s Bach Festival, now underway in the southwestern Polish city of Świdnica.

Nearly two dozen concerts showcasing the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, alongside other famous composers, are staged at a local church and other venues in the city and its outskirts.

The festival officially opens at the UNESCO-listed Evangelical-Augsburg Church of Peace on Friday, 29 July.

This year's roster includes Berlin chamber ensemble Akademie fuer Alte Musik Berlin, and organists Matteo Messori and Cameron Carpenter.

Spectators had the opportunity to see Carpenter “play on his custom-made instrument, the so-called international touring organ, but, first and foremost, [he played] on the newly renovated grand organs of the Church of Peace,” says festival spokesman Mateusz Wiśniewski.

The Bach Festival has been held in Świdnica since 2000. It was launched to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the composer’s death.

The festival winds up on 15 August. (aba/pk)
