The film was one of 61 entries.
The heroes of the film are the director’s grandparents Barbara and Zdzisław celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary.
The happy occasion is somewhat marred by the fact that eight years earlier Zdzisław had left Barbara and moved with his lover. They are together again, but his wife claims that if it were not for health problems with his legs, Zdzisław would still be chasing women around town.
Twenty one year-old Zofia Kowalewska, a student at the Łódź Film School, first thought about making a documentary about her grandparents while in her early teens. “Close Ties” won the Silver Dragon for Best Documentary at this year’s Kraków Film Festival.
The final shortlist of five Oscar nominees will be announced on 24 January. The Academy Award presentation ceremony will be held on 26 February. (mk/rg)
