The study by ILGA-Europe, an organisation campaigning for political, legal and social change to the treatment of LGBTQ people, gave Poland 18 out of a possible 100 points, putting it just one spot ahead of equal-last placed Latvia and Lithuania in terms of rights of sexual minorities.

But Krzysztof Szczerski, head of the Polish president's Cabinet, told the RMF radio station that discrimination was unacceptable and “if anyone feels stigmatised because of any trait, that is something which should not exist”.

He denied that Poland was homophobic, saying: “Poles are and in my opinion should be people who are discretely tolerant”.

The ILGA-Europe study was released on Wednesday, International Day Against Homophobia, Transfobia and Bifobia.

It analysed a number of legal and systemic aspects, including the right for sexual minorities to start families, assemble, and not be discriminated, and found Malta to be leading the way in Europe, with 88 points. (vb/pk)
