Polish firms are left some PLN 31 million (USD 8.6m, EUR 7.3m) out of pocket every day because of staff bunking off for cigarette breaks, according to a report.

"They say time is money. In this case, time spent on smoking is a waste of money for employers," said Marcin Ganclerz from Work Service, the company which commissioned the report.

The study found that three in ten Poles are addicted to cigarettes, while 24 percent of employees smoke at work.

"It turns out that out of eight hours at work, one hour goes on smoking and breaks associated with smoking," Ganclerz said.
