The competition is the only one of its kind in Poland to include all compositions for cello written by Poland's late composer, conductor and pianist, Witold Lutosławski, to whom the event is dedicated.

The competition allows for contestants to perform in a range of musical styles, from baroque to contemporary, with this year's edition to focus on works by Polish composers, including Krzysztof Penderecki, Witold Szalonek, Jerzy Bauer, Marta Ptaszyńska and Paweł Szymański.

In the second stage of the competition, cellists will perform Dariusz Przybylski's Out which was composed especially for the event.

According to former competition's laureate Marcin Zdunik, who is on the competition's judges panel this year, the event is an opportunity for young up-and-comers to test their skills before an audience of outstanding Polish and foreign cellists and possibly break into the concert market.

Competition starts on Tuesday and ends with a laureates concert on 10 February.

Lutosławski (1913-1994) was a war-time pianist who only conducted his own works and never performed in public after the end of the Second World War.
