The movie, Poland’s entry for a foreign-language Oscar, was praised for its artistic use of black and white cinematography to emphasise the romantic relationship between the two main characters in a difficult situation, according to Poland’s PAP news agency.

Pawlikowski’s film won the award on Friday, which also saw the movie hitting the screens in Swedish cinemas.

Cold War is a love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The cast includes leading Polish actors Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, Agata Kulesza and Borys Szyc.

The film won Pawlikowski the best director award at the Cannes Festival in May.

In September, the movie landed the top Golden Lions award at the 43rd Polish Film Festival in the coastal city of Gdynia.

Pawlikowski’s feature Ida won an Oscar in 2015 for best foreign-language film.

Pawlikowski was born in Warsaw in 1957. Having left Poland at the age of 14, he first lived in Germany and Italy before moving to Britain.

He studied literature and philosophy. In the mid-1980s he took up filmmaking, initially focusing on documentaries and then moving on to feature films.
