The Poems on the metro project in Budapest runs until December 20.

The Polish Book Institute, which is the main organiser of the initiative, says on its website that the choice of Herbert is natural at a time when Poland celebrates the centenary of its regained independence. His verse is part of the national canon. Meanwhile, 2018 marks 20 years since Herbert died.

Earlier this month, excerpts from verse by famous Polish poets, including Herbert, were displayed for two weeks on the London underground to draw the attention of the British public to Poland’s literary heritage.

Herbert’s literary works have been translated into 38 languages.
