Jazz greats to perform in Warsaw

The festival kicks off with a performance by the jazz heavyweight Stanley Clarke, backed by a five-piece band. Clarke, a pioneer of jazz fusion, is best known for playing alongside jazz pianist Chick Corea in the legendary jazz fusion group Return to Forever.

US avant-garde guitarist Marc Ducret and jazz-funk ensemble Snarky Puppy were set to perform on Friday. While Ducret is known for his expressive and idiosyncratic style, Snarky Puppy’s trademark are orchestra-like live performances with nine to 12 musicians on stage.

The Devon Lamarr Organ Trio, a soul-jazz band from Seattle, was set to play on Saturday. The trio’s debut album from 2016 entitled Close But No Cigar charted at no. 1 on Billboard magazine’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart.

Sunday, the last day of the festival, culminates with a performance by Benny Golson.

The legendary saxophonist gained fame by playing with Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton and Art Blakey among many others. Golson is also the author of jazz standards such as “Blues March,” “Whisper Not” and “Killer Joe.”

Warsaw Summer Jazz Days has welcomed a long list of jazz giants in recent years, including the likes of Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, John Zorn and Joe Zawinul.
