New Horizons films festival opens in Wroclaw

Some 480 movies from over 50 countries is the bill of fare of the 11th New Horizons film festival, which opened in Wroclaw on Thursday, with 250 films billed to premiere during the event.
The festival was opened by a fascinating Iranian drama “A Separation” by Ashgar Fahradi, winner of the Golden Bear prize at the Berlin Festival.The director himself was present at the screening last night.
Several contests will be held at the New Horizons festival this year. Fourteen films will be shown during the main contest, all of which will have their premiere in Poland. The programme also includes the International Contest of Films about Arts and a New Polish Films compeition.
Film lovers will be treated to several reviews, with the spotlight set on contemporary Norwegian films.
The “Behind the Pink Curtain” series will feature Japanese erotic cinema, a trend born in the 1960s, while “Red Westerns” is a series devoted to movies made in the Soviet Union in the 1920s as well as in the Eastern Bloc countries after World War II, which meet the criteria of the western film genre.
This year the New Horizons festival will play host to Terry Gilliam, member of the legendary Monty Python comedy troupe. Fans will have an opportunity to see feature films and shorts directed by Gilliam.
A key music event at the festival will be a concert by Nick Cave and his Grinderman band, billed to appear on 29 July, two dazs before the event ends on 31 July. (kk/jb)
