The 8th Warsaw Singer Festival of Jewish Culture is due to begin on Saturday, with a slew of international and home-grown stars set to perform.
Music, theatre, literature and the visual arts will all be present, and Mr Zvi Rav Ner, Israel's ambassador to Poland, will also be participating.
The annual event takes its name from Nobel Prize laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer (1902-1991) whose novels vividly conjured the lost Jewish world of Poland, not least Warsaw.
Among the guests set to take part are such celebrated klezmer bands as Frank London's Brass All Stars, Kroke and The Sisters of Sheynville, with a blend of traditional and innovative sounds in store.
In the visual arts, a number of exhibitions are being hosted, including “Singer's world reborn in moving images and sculptures.” The show sees a triumvirate of artists join forces (Lili Fijalkowska, Wlodzimierz Pastuszak and Wieslaw Fijalkowski), utilizing multimedia gadgets to help bring their concepts to life.
As usual, the festival is being hosted on Prozna Street and Grzybowski Square. Here, visitors will find Warsaw's last standing synagogue (Nozyk Synagogue), as well as temporary bakeries, wineries and stalls selling other produce.
The festival is organised by the Shalom Foundation, which was founded in 1988, just a year before the collapse of the Iron Curtain.
This year's edition of the event will run till 4 September. (nh)
