Poland's Culture Minister Bogdan Zdrojewski wants Krakow's Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece, The Lady with an Ermine, to be exhibited at the Cloth Hall on the city's Main Market Square.
The painting, which belongs to the Foundation of the Czartoryski Princes, is currently undergoing extensive tests, following a tour that took in Madrid, Berlin and London.
“I hope that at the end of April, or at the beginning of May, the Lady will be back on show,” he told the Polish Press Agency.
The minister said that he had given Prince Adam Czartoryski, the owner of the work, a guarantee that the painting would be looked after in “the best possible conditions.”
The Czartoryski Museum itself is in the throes of a major revamp, with the relaunch still a distant prospect.
Leonardo's masterpiece would be exhibited at the National Museum's Gallery of 19th Century Polish Art, which is located in the picturesque Cloth Hall that straddles the Market Square.
“Some may be surprised by this desire to locate the picture among 19th century paintings,” the minister reflected, “but there is a possibility to prepare a separate room for exhibiting the work.”. (nh/pg)
