Polish apples banned entry to Russia

Russian authorities have banned the entry of 200 metric tons of fruit and vegetables into the country.

Polish apples are among the food left to rot at the border as the country’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance, Rosselkhoznadzor, has reported that the transport of 90 metric tons of Polish and Moldavian apples has been halted because they are “in violation of the established rules of transit.”
An additional more than 70 metric tons of fruit and vegetables were seized “with unreliable documents issued by the Republic of Belarus”, Rosselkhoznadzor said.
Kremlin-owned agency ITAR-TASS has reported that starting from January 2015, Russia would start importing food from Iran. This is seen as a reaction to trade embargos between the European Union and Russia.
“We made certain that products offered for exporting to Russia from Iran were of high quality, for instance, dairy products,” Rosselkhoznadzor head Alexey Alexeyenko said. The products to be important ranged “from fresh milk to hard cheese”, but could include fish, sea foods, vegetables and fruits. (rg)
