“Mexico is our key partner in Latin America, both in terms of politics and the economy,” Schetyna said during the meeting.
“Now is a good time to make use of Poland’s and Mexico’s economic potential as well as the strength of our regional influence,” he added.
A statement from the Polish Foreign Ministry writes that the two heads of diplomacy spoke about strengthening political dialogue through regular consulatation and cooperation in international forums.
A number of issues concerning industry – including the food, automotive and energy sectors – were also discussed.
“The visit was very important for us as the last contact at such a level was made 12 years ago,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Marcin Wojciechowski told the PAP news agency.
“For many Mexican companies, Poland is a country where they invest and run their business in the European Union,” Wojciechowski said, adding that “the Mexican minister also invited Polish companies to invest in Mexico”.
During the bilateral meeting, Grzegorz Schetyna also handed Kuribreña a letter of intention to become an observer state of the fledgling Pacific Alliance, a Latin American trade union.
With a population of 120 million, Mexico is Poland’s second export partner in Latin America. Some 25,000 Poles visit Mexico annually. (jb)
