Franchise holders are expecting a slump in the number of school canteens in Poland in the wake of a junk food ban that comes into effect on 1 September.

The entrepreneurs argue that their business operations will no longer be economically viable following the ban.
An anonymous source cited by Polish Radio's news agency (IAR) said the canteens will have to up the prices for their products on offer due to the restrictive new laws, with many children, usually provided with an equivalent of 1 euro by their parents, being unable to purchase goods.
Alongside chips, sweetened beverages and candy, new regulations rule out white bread, pancakes and sugared tea.
The canteens will, in turn, offer unprocessed foods, wholegrain bread, fresh fruit and vegetables, but also lean cold cuts and meat. (aba/nh/rk)
