Until now, the annual fee to drive on the country’s roads was RUB 60,000 (EUR 805, USD 903). The fees will now be doubled to RUB 120,000.
The Kremlin said that the devaluation of the Russian currency partly led to the decision.
Russian government experts said that when the former fee of RUB 60,000 was set in 2008 the euro stood at around RUB 35. However, government officials say, over the last two years, the euro exchange rate remained at an average of RUB 70-80.
Following a row that saw lorry traffic between Poland and Russia grind to a halt, officials from the two countries at the beginning of April signed a deal on permits for hauliers that will be in force until the end of the year. (rg/pk)
