One in five households in Poland supported chiefly by women

For one in five Polish married and unwed couples, women’s earnings are the primary source of financial support in the household, a new study shows.

Recent years have seen a steady decline in traditional gender roles in Poland where the man is the breadwinner and the woman the homemaker, research by the Central Statistical Office (GUS) revealed.
The number of female breadwinners has risen sharply since 1993, when it stood at 13 percent.
Coupled with single-adult households – those with single mothers and widows – the percentage is higher still, standing at 39 percent. Twenty-five years ago the figure was 31.4 percent. (aba/pk)
