US, Ukraine among fastest-growing export markets for Polish firms: study

Poland’s exports to the United States increased by 27.8 percent in 2017 compared with a year earlier in terms of value, while exports to Ukraine grew by 26.5 percent and those to Russia rose by 19.7 percent year on year, according to the study by Akcenta, an international financial institution that handles foreign exchange transactions for companies.

Radosław Jarema, director of the institution’s Polish branch, is quoted in a press release as saying that all three markets are large and located outside the European Union, reflecting a growing diversification of Polish exports.

Poland’s exports to some non-EU countries – such as Kazakhstan, Australia and Mexico – grew even more impressively last year, Akcenta said, but the role of these markets in Poland’s overall exports remains marginal. For example, Polish shipments to Kazakhstan increased by a whopping 58.5 percent last year, yet that country’s share in Poland’s total exports was a mere 0.22 percent.

In the first 11 months of last year, Poland shipped EUR 187.7 billion worth of goods abroad, 10.7 percent more than a year earlier, Akcenta said in its press release, citing data by Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS).

Akcenta offers services to exporters and importers carrying out foreign exchange transactions. It is active in five countries in Central Europe: Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary.
