Poland’s PKP Cargo orders new trains

PKP Cargo, Poland’s largest rail freight carrier, has placed an order for five new Vectron trains, the PAP news agency has reported.

The trains are worth a total of PLN 112 million (EUR 26m) and will be used on international routes, starting mid-year.
The new trains are certified for use on railways in 18 European countries, including Poland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary, and will be able to reach speeds of 160 km/h.
Czesław Warsewicz, the head of PKP Cargo, said the purchase is part of ongoing efforts to modernise rolling stock.
“We are carrying out an expansion strategy. One of its aims is to become the leader in freight transport in the Three Seas Initiative countries region,” Warsewicz added.
The Three Seas Initiative is a regional drive to boost infrastructure, energy and economic cooperation as well as political ties among 12 European countries.
It brings together Poland, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary.
PKP Cargo already owns 15 Vectron trains, bought in 2015.
