Gov't working on low-carbon strategy for Poland: minister

Enterprise and Technology Minister Jadwiga Emilewicz told a conference that experts at her ministry were working on a long-term strategy to reduce the country's carbon footprint amid efforts to embrace climate challenges.

Energy-sector transformation is a long-lasting and costly process, but the government is not afraid of this challenge, Emilewicz declared at the Energy Transformation Forum conference, as quoted by Poland’s PAP news agency.

Opening the event in Warsaw on Wednesday, she said that work to transform the energy sector should go hand in hand with efforts to improve energy efficiency and employ resource management models such as the circular economy concept.

Emilewicz also told the conference that the proposed European Union target of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 "seems difficult" and that "a significant reduction of emissions will require a huge effort considering that demand for energy is growing."

She named offshore wind power and what is known as prosumer energy among methods of meeting ambitious climate goals, the PAP news agency reported.

Energy Minister Krzysztof Tchórzewski said last month that Poland was preparing to build its first nuclear power plant, a project that the government plans to complete by 2033.
