Poland’s finance minister has called for regulation of international tax laws after a trove of documents were leaked revealing influential people across the globe used secret offshore accounts in tax havens.

Finance Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who is also a deputy prime minister, said the European Union should “fight for an end to tax practices which break the principles of solidarity and basic justice”.
“The European Commission, European Parliament and Council of the European Union should immediately address the issue of the Paradise Papers, since we are probably talking billions in unpaid tax, which have shrunk the budgets of [European Union] member states,” Morawiecki said.
The so-called Paradise Papers are some 13 million documents, mainly from one company dealing in offshore banking investments in tax havens, published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which was behind the Panama Papers leak last year.
The documents allegedly showed that some 120 influential politicians from 50 countries, as well as rich businessmen and celebrities, secretly invested cash in offshore tax havens.
Among those named are Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, rock star Bono, pop star Madonna and people close to US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. (vb/pk)
