The leaders of Poland’s Protestant churches have published an open letter to city mayors lambasting an LGBT declaration signed by Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski last month.

The letter, initiated by the leader of the Polish Baptist Church, says the so-called LGBT Plus declaration is a violation of the rights of parents, is harmful to children and amounts to “a totalitarian interference of the state into the peace of the home environment.”

According to the signatories of the letter, it is the family that enjoys the full right to educate children in line with its own beliefs.

The LGBT Plus declaration, which sets out Warsaw City Hall’s policy on issues such as bringing sex and tolerance education into schools and finding shelter for children who have been thrown out of their homes by homophobic parents, is based on World Health Organisation guidelines.

Representatives of Protestant churches in Poland have said they are highly critical of these guidelines.
