Agnieszka Radwanska also won her fourth round match against Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova 4-6 6-3 6-3.

In the men's competition, Janowicz and Kubot kept spectators on the edge of their seats, both running to five-set matches.

Neither match saw an auspicious start for Poland, with Kubot going down 4-6 to France's Adrian Mannarino in the first set, and Janowicz losing 3-6 in his first encounter with Austrian Jurgen Melzer.

Both bounced back in their second sets, Kubot winning 6-3, and Janowicz, who has been nicknamed “the Pole-veriser”, going to 7-6 in a tie-break.

There was plenty more drama ahead, with Kubot losing the third set 3-6, before taking the next two 6-3, 6-4.

Janowicz won his third set, 6-4, before losing the next 4-6, only to take the reins again in the decisive clash, winning 6-4.

Kubot and Janowicz will now meet each other in the last eight.

It's unbelievable what is going on right now. We have two players in the quarterfinals and a woman in the quarterfinals. I think this is by far the best what possibly could happen to Polish tennis," Janowicz told wimbledon.com.

In the women's tournament, Agnieszka Radwanska, last year's runner-up, is now the highest seed left in the singles – after Serena Williams lost 6-2 1-6 6-4 to German Sabine Lisicki - and will now meet Li Na for a place in the semi-finals. (nh/pg)
