Legia had trouble mustering an equaliser with the Dutch champions after Ajax’s Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik put one away against the Warsaw side in the 35th minute.

Before the match, the Warsaw side was weakened due to the absence of their star striker Miroslav Radovic, who is set to be tranferred to Chinese second devision side Hebei China Fortune and sat out the match on the reserve benches.

Henning Berg, Legia’s coach, said after the match that “we had a good game” although Radovic’s impending transfer meant that “he was not mentally prepared for the game” which had “catastrophic consequences for the team”.

Meanwhile, Ajax coach Frank de Boer said that “the match in Warsaw will be a tough one”, adding that he estimates that the Dutch club has a “60 percent chance of going through” to the next round.

Legia will now play Ajax at home in Warsaw on 26 February. (jb)
