The “Pride of Poland” auction saw the sale of 28 mares bred mainly in the state stud farms of Janów Podlaski, Michałow and Białka.
Pepita, a grey Arabian mare foaled in 2005 sold for a record EUR 1.4 million – the highest ever in Poland. The second and third most expensive thoroughbreads, Pistoria and Wieża Róż brought in EUR 625,000 and 270,000 respectively.
“The event in Janów Podlaski has a unique atmosphere, and attracts thousands of lovers of Arabian horses from Poland, as well as around the world,” said Mariola Zajbt from Warsaw and Karol Karczewski from Międzyrzec Podlaski.
Last year the auction brought in bids worth over a million euros and in 2008 a Sheikh from the United Arab Emirates paid EUR 1.125 million for a prized horse.
Every year the auction draws crowds from all over the world, with Shirley Watts, wife of the Rolling Stones' drummer, Charlie Watts, one of them. (rg/rk)
