It was the first time that Poland had managed three gold medals at the championships.

The result will boost the team's confidence ahead of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

This year, Poland's gold rush was pulled off by hammer-throwers Paweł Fajdek and Anita Włodarczyk (the latter just 23 cm short of her own world record), together with Piotr Małachowski in the discus.

Adam Kszczot took silver in the 800 metres, while Piotr Lisek and Pawel Wojciechowski shared bronze in the pole vault, and Robert Urbanek took bronze in the discus.

The games wrapped up on Sunday evening with a colourful closing ceremony.

Some 206 nations participated in the Beijing games, and Kenya was the overall winner with seven golds, six silvers and three bronzes. Jamaica came second, followed by the United States.

Poland managed eight medals at the Berlin World Championships of 2009, but with two gold medals as opposed to this year's three. (nh/rk)
