It is the highest spot ever for the Polish team since the world football governing body’s ranking was launched in 1992. Poland's lowest rank was 78th, in 2013.
According to the onet.pl website, the Polish team is likely to make history in June by breaking for the first time ever into the top 10, despite not playing a single game in the coming weeks.
The website explains that the ranking factors in the final score of games played over the past four years, and whether the match was friendly or competitive, the rank of the rival and other variables.
The next ranking is published on 1 June.
Brazil topped the FIFA ranking in May, followed by Argentina and Germany. (vb/pk)
