The 32-year-old Pole won the Track & Field News vote for the third time in four years.

Russian high jumper Mariya Lasitskene ranked second, and Greek pole vaulter Katerína Stefanídi came in third in the vote, by an international panel of experts polled by the publication.

Włodarczyk, a double Olympic champion, is the first woman in history to throw the hammer over 80 metres. Her current world record is 82.98 metres.

In August, Włodarczyk defended her world championship title at the IAAF World Championships in London.

In early January, she was named as Polish athlete of 2016 following an annual public vote.
