The Polish world No. 28 on Tuesday saw off Britain’s Johanna Konta 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of the Australian tournament.
Konta, who is ranked No. 9 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), took the title at the WTA Sydney International last year after a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Radwańska in the final.
Radwańska next faces American qualifier Catherine Bellis (WTA No. 56), who beat Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6 (2), 6-0 in the first round.
The Polish tennis player, a former world No. 2, is struggling to return to form after an uninspiring season last year. She ended 2017 ranked outside the Top 20 for the first time in a decade.
Before coming to Sydney, Radwańska failed to make an impact at the ASB Classic tennis tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, her first tournament this year.
