Włodarczyk, a double Olympic champion and a three-time world champion, won the designation for the fifth straight year in an annual project co-organised by City Hall.

Fencer Ewa Nelip was ranked second and sailor Zofia Noceti-Klepacka was named the Polish capital’s third-best athlete last year by a panel of former champions led by legendary runner Irena Szewińska.

Meanwhile, up-and-coming taekwondo star Patrycja Adamkiewicz was voted the city’s Most Popular Athlete last year in an online poll by fans. Adamkiewicz accomplished feats including a silver medal at the 29th Summer Universiade games for university athletes in Taipei, Taiwan, last year.

The Warsaw Athlete of the Year awards, now in their 18th year, were announced at a bash in the Polish capital on Friday.

Włodarczyk formally represents a local sports club called RKS Skra Warszawa.

In December, she was voted women's world athlete of the year by America’s Track & Field News magazine.

In August, Włodarczyk defended her world championship title at the IAAF World Championships in London.
