The 31-year-old, a mother of twins, on Sunday competed in her last World Cup race, placing 29th in the women’s 12.5km mass-start event in Tyumen, Russia.
In early January, Nowakowska notched up her career's best individual World Cup finish, coming in fourth in the women’s 10km pursuit race in Oberhof, Germany.
Nowakowska failed to live up to fans’ hopes at the Pyeongchang Olympic Winter Games in South Korea in February.
Poland finished seventh in the women's biathlon 4x6km relay at the Pyeongchang Games, with Nowakowska squandering the team’s lead and chances of a medal on the last leg of the race.
In 2015, Nowakowska won a silver and a bronze in competitions at the Biathlon World Championships in Kontiolahti, Finland.
Tobias Torgersen, the Norwegian head coach for Poland’s women’s biathlon team, has taken to Twitter to salute Nowakowska, who said she is ending her sports career to focus on family.
