The match in the Belgian city of Kortrijk on Wednesday marked the Polish team's eighth game of the 2019 Women's Volleyball Nations League, which kicked off last month.

Poland lost 1-3 to Serbia in their previous match in Kortrijk in western Belgium.

The Poles were on Thursday afternoon due to face off against Russia in their last fixture in the Belgian leg of the Nations League series.

Poland beat the Netherlands, Brazil and Bulgaria during the Dutch leg of the competition last week.

The Polish team earlier in May saw off Germany 3-1 and posted a straight-set 3-0 win over Thailand in the southern Polish city of Opole.

Poland lost 2-3 to Italy in their opening game at this year's Women’s Volleyball Nations League.

After Kortrijk in Belgium, the Polish women’s national volleyball team will travel to Asia for two more legs of the series.

Sixteen national teams are competing in the annual women's volleyball series, which is now in its second season.

The league, which has replaced the World Grand Prix competition, is run by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), the sport’s world governing body.

The 2019 Women's Volleyball Nations League finals will be held in China from July 2 to 6, with the top five teams plus the host nation taking part.

The defending champions are the United States, who last year defeated Turkey 3-2 in the league’s final match.

The Poles finished ninth in last year’s Nations League games.
