Poland’s top biathlete Monika Hojnisz and cross-country skier Maciej Staręga have taken time off training in the off-season to tie the knot after several years of dating, according to reports.

The Polish Biathlon Association (PZB) has posted a photo from their low-key wedding ceremony in a historic church in the southern city of Chorzów earlier this month.

The sport’s national governing body said that in the run-up to the big day, Hojnisz was excused from attending a training camp in the coastal town of Ustka, where the Polish women’s national biathlon team travelled to practice ahead of the winter season.

German Michael Greis, a former successful biathlete who retired from the sport in 2012, was last month named the new head coach for Poland’s women’s biathlon team to replace Ukrainian Nadiya Bilova.

Hojnisz, 27, is a leading light of Polish biathlon after several teammates have retired from competitive sports in recent years.

Hojnisz in December came in runner-up in the women’s 15 km individual race in Pokljuka, Slovenia, notching up her best-ever World Cup finish.

She in February last year finished sixth in the women’s 15 km individual biathlon competition at the winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

The Pole in 2013 won a world biathlon championship bronze in the women’s 12.5 km mass start event.

Meanwhile, her brand-new husband is a leading Polish cross-country skier who, however, has seen a slump in form in recent years.

Staręga, 29, finished 39th in the men’s cross-country skiing individual classic sprint at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

Former Czech star skier Lukáš Bauer was last month named as the new head coach of the Polish men’s national cross-country skiing team. He said at the time that one of his priorities would be to put Staręga back on track for big-time racing.
