The vice president, whose responsibilities include overseeing financing operations in Poland, said the country leading the way in its region in terms of use of the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFIS).

The EFIS, which aims to overcome an investment gap in the EU, has earmarked EUR 315 billion for investments in the EU's economy to 2018.

Hudak said most of the money loaned to Poland would be spent on expanding Warsaw's second underground rail line.

He added EBI lending will go not only to government projects but also local government and private sector investments.

So far, the EFIS has issued PLN 4.1 billion in loans for 11 major investments in Poland worth more than PLN 11.5 billion, and Hudak said the EBI is likely to engage in two additional projects in Warsaw. (vb)
