A milestone agreement to hand over security to Afghan forces mid-2013, alongside announcements of an operational interim missile shield are the key outcomes of the two-day NATO summit in Chicago, which brought together leaders of 60 countries from across the globe.

"NATO will continue to train, advise and support Afghan forces as they grow stronger," US President Barack Obama said at Monday’s NATO session which ended in sealing a landmark agreement to end a decade-long war in Afghanistan and reaffirming the timetable for a combat troop withdrawal by the end of 2014.
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski attending the summit, alongside the Polish president and defence minister, assured that Poland remained committed to the 2014 timetable.
Following the pullout, NATO seeks to leave behind a fraction of the Afghan-based contingent to train the country’s police and military forces, shifting to an assistance mission.
